Support for foreign-language students
The University offers two support measures for foreign-language students in the Assessment Year
1. Extension of examination time
In written examinations, students who are not German native speakers have the time of their examinations extended by 15 minutes per examination hour.
2. Extension of the Assessment Year
Foreign-language students can extend their Assessment Year to four semesters (variants A/B/C). In addition, students may provisionally enter the Bachelor’s Level after the 2nd semester at their own risk (only with variants B or C). The benchmark criteria are:
- Students cannot change their chosen variant.
- It is possible for students to attend lectures/seminars of the Assessment Year and the Bachelor’s Level at the same time.
- If students fail the examinations of the Assessment Year, any work done at Bachelor’s Level will be suspended. Students will first have to repeat the Assessment Year.
- Students can only be granted an extension to the Assessment Year once, i.e. if they do not pass their examinations after these four semesters, the second attempt at the Assessment Year will be the standard two semesters.
- Students may also avail themselves of the extension of examination time the second time round.
This measure enables students to design the Assessment Year according to their own knowledge of and progress in the course language. They can slow down the examination rhythm and take more time to acquire the relevant knowledge.
Students can opt for the two support measures individually or in combination. They have to declare, and provide evidence of, their native language when they enrol for the course (native language = school language), and this language will be the basis for the decision as to whether requirements for the support measures are satisfied.
Important: both measures can only be granted on request. The form “Application for the special regulations for foreign-language students” can be collected from the Office of Student administration (05-106). This application must be submitted to the Office of Student administration by the end of the second week of term time, i.e. by 30 September 2011.
Please also note the implementation provisions, “Special regulations for foreign-language students” (in German).
